Finding Refuge in God
Helping you find with God's presence in the mountains and valleys.
"God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1
What Leads You Here?
You have been on a journey seeking God's guidance and clarity on matters of life.
You sense a loss and disconnection in relationships with friends, loved ones, and God. You feel uprooted from the people and things that keep you grounded.
You are going through a season of hurt and trauma. You don't have to walk this journey alone. Explore what is on your heart and bring it before God in a safe and gentle environment.
Experiencing Transition
Loss or Trauma
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30
"For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us." - Psalm 62:5-8
What is Spiritual Direction?
"Spiritual direction is "help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God's personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship." - William Barry & William Connolly
"Christian spiritual direction seeks to help directees: dive deeper into prayer and draw closer to God in everyday life; discover God’s care in the midst of difficulties; become aware of the sacred within the ordinary events of life; honestly share with God their feelings, doubts and questions; become more like Christ and experience the fruits of the Spirit; move from a preoccupation with their sinfulness to a grace-full life of love and service." - Sue Pickering

Why Spiritual Direction?
"Many people come to spiritual direction because they are no longer at home in their own world. They are exploring or reexploring their ideas about God and faith. Their pictures of God are changing, or their practices. But most of all, they notice their own struggling. They no longer feel comfortable where they used to sense they belonged. They ask who or what has shifted, God or them. The place they worshiped for years may have changed or their ideas or feelings are developing in different directions. They may not be able to say immediately what has changed, but whatever it is, they feel they are adrift and are finding it disquieting. They are asking what God might be saying or showing them. It may take a while to gather courage to give words to the discomfort." Sue Pickering

Experiencing God in the Midst of Loss
"I'm a trained spiritual director and have completed my training with Poema. I want to offer spiritual direction because it has been helpful for my spiritual health and transformative in my relationship with God. I am learning more about myself, giving myself grace, and being at peace and living a slower contemplative life.
My spiritual director has helped me to be more attenttive in my faith journey. I don’t always get it right. In fact, I struggle with fear, anxiety, insecurity and pride like everyone else. My director has been gracious in offering me space to share what’s on my heart, to discern and to pray for me to be more attentive to God.
I believe one of the most important things we can do for each other is to offer our undivided attention in a prayer-centered relationship. In spiritual direction, the directee gets to share what is most important to him or her. The director asks questions to bring issues to the surface so we can explore them before God.
I started Refuge Spiritual Direction because there is a need for deeper intimate connection in a world full of spiritual refugees. We are seeking belonging and shelter in a world that makes us feel disconnected and isolated. Despite our best attempts to find meaning and direction we feel lost and we struggle to find our home and identity as image-bearers of Christ. Refuge Spiritual Direction explores your story in light of God’s invitation to find rest and peace in him." - Hans Labor
